Autumn is a great time to do lawn renovations, whether you need a complete re-sowing or are just fixing up a few ugly bare patches. The benefit of doing your renovation now is that your lawns will look thick and pristine when spring and summer arrive!

So, what do you need to know when planning a lawn renovation?

Choosing the right seed

When you’re choosing your lawn seed, consider which grass will be best to meet your everyday demands - from high traffic to looking like a golf green - without weeds appearing.

A little tip here in choosing lawn seeds – look for the purity of the seed, it should be over 97.5% (the higher the percentage, the better).

Fertiliser Recommendation:

When it comes to fertilisers, I like to take a holistic approach. I recommend adding an organic fertiliser content that encourages earthworms and beneficial soil micro-organisms, that in turn help to improve the soil’s porosity (drainage) and air movement. This all makes it easier for your lawn to grow and root deeper into the soil. Having happy microbes is the secret to a good lawn, because the microbes break down your fertiliser into a form that lawn grass can absorb.

Using a slow-releasing lawn food helps, which gently feeds your lawn for up to 12 weeks, helps your lawn transition into winter.

Lime:

Applying lime in autumn allows it to gradually break down in the coming months, when the weather’s not too hot, and start working in the spring. Remember, don’t apply your lime just after using your autumn lawn fertiliser, as this reduces the effectiveness of both. Leave at least a two-week gap.

I also recommend doing a soil sample every two years to check your soil pH and the soil’s overall nutrient levels. I’m happy to do this for you, and put a nutrient plan in place for you going forward - just get in touch.

Weed control:

Autumn is an excellent time to tackle broadleaf weeds before winter arrives. Remember to select a broadleaf ‘lawn’ herbicide, or an organic product that specifically targets weeds in lawns. Remember to read the instructions carefully so you don’t kill everything!

By doing this, you reduce the competition for resources over the colder months, and give your lawn space to grow - both of which are important in establishing a great-looking lawn.

Lush, thick lawn - the result of careful planning and the right fertilisers.
